Text
of human rights declaration on their bodies :
Festival AOZIZ - international campaign,
"Human Rights Tattoo" -

Dutch artist
Sander Van Bussel was in Marseille this Saturday to offer passers-by
the chance
to get tattoos of the letters of the Universal Declaration of Human
Rights.
It's only a
letter, but full of meaning: in Marseilles, on Saturday, the Dutch
artist
Sander Van Bussel offered passers-by to get a tattoo of one of the
6,773
letters of the "Universal Declaration of Human Rights", a project
started 10 years ago to make this emblematic text "alive".
This project
in English, "Human Rights Tattoo", the artist started it after the
murder of a colleague and friend.
And for the
first time, his wanderings across the globe led him to France, just
after the
Netherlands and Mexico, within the joint framework of the Aoziz
Festival
"of precarious and migrant LGBTQ artists" and the Festival de
Marseilles.
4.600 participants
At the rate
of one letter tattooed per person since 2012, the 30 articles of the
"Universal Declaration of Human Rights", signed on December 10, 1948
in Paris by the Member States of the UN, are already deployed on the
skin of
some 4,600 participants, of 78 different nationalities, like so many
banners
moving around the world.
I wanted to
"make this text alive", make it "the living Declaration of Human
Rights", explained Sander Van Bussel, during a tattoo session in the
heart
of Marseille.
"For me, it's a work of
art because I'm an artist, a social artist: with my work, I want to
contribute
to society, to humanity," he added, sporting his own even an "R"
tattooed on the arm.
"I
didn't think it was going to take ten years": "We still have three or
four years left, but that's good news, because as long as there are
letters to
tattoo, it stimulates people, it lifts questions, which is the real
purpose of
this project", continued the artist.
An exhibition at the Mucem
Each letter,
once tattooed, is photographed by Sander Van Bussel, who exhibits for
the first
time, until July 9, at the Museum of
European
and Mediterranean Civilizations
(Mucem) in Marseille, all of these negatives placed side by side on
large
parchments, part of which therefore remains blank.
