Asylum
seekers, refugees,
trans individuals kicked out...
During the Coronavirus crisis and the
ensuing confinement, our Shelter
continued to function thanks to donations and volunteer work from
members of
our network. Thank you!
Indeed, because of the health crisis,
we were not able to reach our
objectives financially, even if our refuge welcomed at that time six
young
people who had difficulty in obtaining food (because our local sister
organizations distributing food were also closed). We launched a
donation
campaign to buy basic necessities for our refugee residents.
This also allows us to reflect on the
fragility of this progressive,
inclusive and self-managing movement. A broader reflection, concerning
us all
as a citizen, must be elaborated with regard to the place which one
grants to
health and solidarity in our democratic societies, where these
initiatives
which appear today more than ever as essential, are too often still
called
marginal.
Thus, intersectional modes of action -
between intellectuals, activists
and artists - must be encouraged in the future.
We
had the pleasure to launch this year the third level of our training
dedicated to progressive imam-as from Europe and elsewhere:
In addition, CALEM continues to be regularly
consulted internationally by
governments and foundations, in Europe or worldwide, mainly regarding
the
status of refugees and the training of imams (Muslim leaders). Since
2008,
CALEM has (co)supervised dozens of publications, training and public
events,
in different languages and in more than thirty countries (Europe but
also
North, South Africa, Middle East, Americas, Asia of South East).
CALEM received the SOS homophobia award in 2010,
was supported by the
European Council in 2012, was an advisor to the British court of
justice for
the status of refugees, was an advisor to the French government on the
law on
marriage for all, and adviser on the constitution of ILGA Africa (the
largest
LGBT organization in the world), and continues to work for inclusive
societies
through progressive representation of Islam, in collaboration with our
international movement.
